Gabriel Popescu Atelier House

The project entitled “Restoration and consolidation of the Gabriel Popescu Atelier House, Vulcana-Pandele Commune, Dâmbovița County” was financed under the Programme RO12 - “Conservation and revitalization of cultural and natural heritage”

Gabriel Popescu is one of the most distinguished engravers, successor of Theodor Aman and Nicolae Grigorescu, his artistic and didactic activity (he was a profession at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest for 25 years) representing an important contribution to the history of Romanian engraving. The museum, known under the generic name of “Gabriel Popescu'' Atelier House, is located in the village of Gura Vulcănii (Vulcana Pandele Commune), Dâmbovița County, where the artist was born, in a very beautiful hilly landscape.

The restoration and rehabilitation of the atelier house made possible its reinsertion in the national and international circuit of museums, the regain of its importance, and, most importantly, revitalized and perpetuated engraving as an extremely precious artistic technique, which more and more artists use to express their artistic ideas. The creation here of a unique engraving centre, with engraving ateliers and spaces to accommodate participants to workshops or art camps (artists in residence), which will make this place a point of attraction for Romanian and foreign artists, being both an artistic crucible and a significant touristic place.
