We are happy to share the success story behind the closure of the temporary waste landfill in Suceava. How did it all begin? Between 2014 and 2019, over 420,000 cubic meters of waste from Suceava were deposited in Ipotești, a landfill located 2 km from the city and 250 meters from the Suceava River.
The initial plan for this waste was to transfer it to the Moara ecological landfill over a period of 4 years, involving more than 4200 truck trips and costs of nearly 10 million euros.
BUT a better solution was found! With an amount of 2,246,000 euros provided by the EEA Grants under the RO Environment Program, the Municipality of Suceava closed the temporary landfill in situ, without generating additional pollution in the area due to waste transport.
The elimination of the major source of soil, water, and air pollution, as well as the biogas emissions and unpleasant odors associated with the landfill, benefits the 105,000 residents and 5,200 economic agents and public institutions (31,500 employees) in Suceava.
The in-situ closure technology of the landfill represents a good practice example in the field because:
Thus, 100% funding for the project (without local budget contribution) ensured a positive social impact by improving the health and well-being of the community, strengthening social cohesion, and increasing ecological awareness.
