The black stork (Ciconia nigra)

We have news of interest for both nature lovers and those who seek rare and precious moments when rare species make their appearance on Romanian territory! The good news is especially directed towards bird enthusiasts! A camera installed in the Molhașu Călățele bog (Cluj-Napoca county) has captured footage of a black stork! Scientifically named Ciconia nigra, this species is very rare in Romania, only present during the breeding seasons.

The news comes from the Institute of Biology Bucharest of the Romanian Academy and its partner, the Norwegian Institute for Nature Conservation Research (NINA), along with valuable information for those passionate about natural curiosities.

The black stork (Ciconia nigra) is a migratory bird, protected by the Birds Directive at the European level as well as by six other international treaties. In our country, it is present between March and September, nesting in secluded areas. As a habitat, it prefers old forests, with open areas, located in the vicinity of water sources (ponds, swamps, small rivers).

The mosaic of restored habitats within the Degraded mires and peatlands restoration of North-West region of Romania (PeatRO4) project, financed through EEA Grants, thus becomes suitable for the nesting of rare species such as Ciconia nigra.
